SonLight Power partners with Haiti Nursing Foundation/FSIL to improve healthcare and clean water access in Haiti

I speak for our board and the Governing Board of FSIL when I say we are so grateful for the work SonLight Power has done for FSIL.

Life at Haiti’s most prestigious nursing school has been improved with the installation of a five-panel solar array by SonLight Power.

The roof-mounted array will provide enough power to energize a water pump that will bring 4,000 gallons of fresh water per day to the surface. The water will serve the needs of both the nursing school and surrounding neighborhoods in the city of Léogâne.

“This system will significantly reduce the school’s reliance on a diesel generator,” said Allen Rainey, SonLight Power founder and Director of Programs. Allen served as on-site supervisor for the SonLight Power mission team that installed the solar power system.

The Faculté des Sciences Infirmières de l’Université Episcopale d’Haïti in Léogâne, commonly known as FSIL, opened its doors in 2005 as Haiti’s first four-year nursing school.

More than 100 nurses have graduated from the school and 95 percent of them have remained in Haiti where their training and experience in the underserved country is highly valued.

FSIL is supported financially by the Haiti Nursing Foundation (HNF), a Michigan-based non-profit organization. Through FSIL, HNF provides funding to selected project to improve nursing in Haiti.

“I speak for our board and the Governing Board of FSIL when I say we are so grateful for the work SonLight Power has done for FSIL,” said Marcia Lane, Executive Director of HNF.

FSIL survived the 2010 earthquake even though more 90 percent of Léogâne’s buildings were destroyed. The school’s nursing students provided important first aid and the school itself housed a team of Japanese rescue workers.

Allen notes that this project may be only the beginning of SonLight Power’s work with FSIL. The school is contemplating a larger solar installation perhaps as early as next year that would even further reduce reliance on diesel generation.

Thanks to your generous support and prayers, SonLight Power’s reputation is growing as a trusted solar energy partner for missionaries, particularly in Haiti and other countries where sustainable electricity is essential to outreach.

Biblically speaking, we are equipping the saints (Ephesians 4:12) with the solar power they need to impact more lives in the name of Jesus.

Wish you had been with us in Haiti? You were, and continue to be present for the FSIL nurses and Léogâne community served each day through the fresh water pumped by solar power. Thank you.
