Happy Earth Day: SonLight Power celebrates by fighting energy poverty and climate change
The world faces two big energy challenges and, at first glance, their solutions may seem contradictory: How do we bring electricity to the more than 1.3 billion people who, today, do not have it while at the same time, reduce carbon dioxide emissions that, most scientists agree, are changing our climate?
The answer lies in the heavens, where God has placed our sun and earth in just the right spots to make our planet habitable. Clean, quiet, efficient solar power is a key part of the answer to the challenge of eliminating energy poverty while, at the same time, caring for the planet.
Did you know that the sun provides more energy in one single hour than every nation on earth produces in a year?
Solar power is the fastest growing energy source today. In the U.S. alone, there is now enough solar electric capacity to power 3.5 million homes. Last year, 36 percent of the new electricity sources that came on line were solar and projections for 2015 look as sunny.
But it's the developing world where solar is making its mark. Thanks to your continued support, SonLight Power has become an experienced and respected provider of solar energy to thousands of people in Haiti, Honduras, Kenya, Mexico, Panama and other countries.
As we replace their darkness with light, we leave the air and water as God provided it.
April is Earth Month and a good time to celebrate the clean energy projects SonLight Power has led. It's also a good time to reaffirm our commitment to the proposition that both seemingly intractable problems – energy poverty and climate change – can, and must, be solved.
The late Chuck Colson addressed this very topic and provided an unsolicited endorsement of SonLight Power during his nationally syndicated Breakpoint broadcast, Renewable Energy and the Poor – Stewardship in Action. Re-visit this 2012 broadcast, or check it out for the first time.
Thank you again for your support of SonLight Power.
